Missionary Position

The Missionary position is often considered the classic sex position; it gets its name from the idea that it is the most pure or morally appropriate way to have sex (so proper, even religious missionaries can do it!). You're not going to get any points for creativity with this one, but it remains the favorite of many for its intimacy and ease.

The man is taking the lead here, and it is precisely for this reason that many couples love this position. Many women love the protected feeling of being under their partner, while men can get a masculine kick out of taking control. Some couples feel that this position is the most romantic.

Clitoral Stimulation

This position is not known for providing women with clitoral stimulation. Particularly if her legs are bent and her pelvis tilted upward, his thrusting is likely to miss her clitoris entirely. However, a small variation on the Missionary position can allow women to achieve a high degree of clitoral stimulation. This variation, called the Coital Alignment Technique, was invented by sexologists Masters & Johnson to help women achieve orgasm in the male-superior position.

To try the Coital Alignment Technique (or CAT for short), the man will position himself higher on his partner's body, with his head above hers and his whole body shifted upward so that the base of his penis presses against her clitoris. Then, rather than thrusting in and out, he'll rock against her, maintaining deep penetration and keeping the base of the penis in constant contact with her clitoris. The motion is more up-and-down rocking rather than in-and-out thrusting, creating consistent friction along the clitoris to provide the stimulation that many women need to have an orgasm in this position.

The woman may also want to experiment with the positioning of her legs in this position. Having her legs flat on the bed, rather than bent upward, may help angle her pelvis downward and put her clitoris closer to the action.

G-Spot Stimulation

Like the clitoris, the standard Missionary isn't going to do much for the G-Spot. In the basic position, the man will likely thrust right past it. However, with some alterations, you can hit the G-Spot in this position. You may want to start by supporting the woman's hips with a pillow underneath. This tilts her pelvis up, making the G-Spot more accessible. She can also bend her legs back as much as possible. From there, it is all about angles. The man will want to thrust upward, toward her belly button, so that the tip of his penis contacts the front wall of her vagina. This is easier for men whose penises naturally point upward; guys who stick straight out or point toward the floor will have more of a challenge.

Because the angle is a bit limited, you're unlikely to be able to achieve as much G-Spot stimulation here as you could in other positions, but for G-Spot fans this alteration can really take Missionary to the next level.
